The Top Speed Of A Can-Am Maverick X3 And How To Make It Go Faster!

Some folks say that speeds over 60-65 MPH in an X3 Maverick is terrifying enough, while others say that it starts getting fun at these speeds. But this begs the question, what is the top speed of a Can-Am Maverick X3?

Well, the fastest recorded land speed of a Can-Am Maverick X3 is 112 MPH… but this is under ideal conditions with a heavily souped up machine. With a stock Can-Am Maverick X3, the fastest you’ll get is around 80 MPH. But even this number will vary from one X3 edition to the next, and from one X3 model year to another. Plus, there are several aftermarket modifications you can make to your X3 Maverick to unleash its full potential. But regardless of whether you’re curious about the top speeds of the various Maverick X3 models, or if you want to make your buggy the fastest amongst your peer group, here is what you need to know about the top speed of the Can-Am Maverick X3, as well as some ideas you can implement to make it go even faster!

What Is The Fastest Can-Am Maverick X3 Model?

The most powerful (and therefore fastest) versions of the Can-Am Maverick X3 lineup are the vehicles equipped with a 200 HP Rotax Turbo engine. This is one of the most powerful UTV engines available to date, and when you add the Can-Am pDrive clutch into the equation, you also get ultra-fast accelerations to reach that top speed sooner!

In 2023, the Can-Am Maverick X3 variants with a 200 HP engine include all the RR models – which are the Maverick X3 DS and X DS Turbo RR 64; the Maverick X3 RS and X RS Turbo RR 72; the Maverick X3 X RC Turbo RR 64 and 72; the Maverick X3 X MR Turbo RR 64 and 72; and the 4-seat MAX versions of the DS Turbo RR 64, RS turbo RR 72, X RS turbo RR 72, X RS Turbo RR With Smart-Shox 72, and the X MR Turbo RR 72. Despite running the same motors with the same power output, however, the aforementioned RR X3 editions don’t have identical top speeds, and there are several reasons for this!

Although it can push the same ponies as the other RR editions, the Can-Am Maverick X3 X Mr has a slower top speed. The main reason for this is the mud tires that come stock on the X3 X Mr, which are both heavy and knobby. As such, you’ll probably only get north of 65 MPH out of a factory X Mr. Swap out those tires and disconnect the vehicle’s speed sensor, however, and this 65-70 MPH speed limit can be overcome! Yes your speedometer will not display an accurate speed afterwards, but you can check your improved speeds with a GPS device to make sure!

If you don’t want to mess with your machine’s speed sensor, you can instead flash its ECU. By tricking the computer into thinking it’s an X RS edition, you can push past the factory rev limiter with RPMs in excess of 8,000 to reach a top speed of nearly 90 MPH! Some aftermarket Can-Am Maverick X3 handheld ECU tuners can be used to do this, you can use a bench flash if you have access to one. Not only can you remove speed and rev governors with an ECU tuning box, but you can also boost the vehicle’s performance by unlocking the ECU for different maps and drive modes!

How To Make Your Can-Am Maverick X3 Go Faster!

Aside from a properly tuned / flashed ECU or devices like the Stage 2 or Stage 3 Launch Control units by Evolution Powersports and DynoJet tuner, you can also go faster in a Can-Am Maverick X3 by upgrading the intercooler, installing an aftermarket fuel pump, and adding a Flowmaster dual exhaust. Further speed gains can be achieved with charge tubes / blow off valves, and a high-speed belt is advised if you’re going to ride for prolonged periods of time with the pedal to the metal. Finally, you can also get more RPS on the high end – and thus faster top speeds – by adjusting your clutch spring settings.

Can-Am Maverick X3 Performance Keys

The speed and performance of your X3 Maverick can be radically affected by the type of key you use. According to the old 2018 owner’s manual, the green key is supposed to be the performance key, while the white key is supposed to be the restricted / normal key. You can pop the tabs out of the keys to change their color, and dealers are responsible for programming the keys, and they don’t always adhere to the manual.Because your local Can-Am dealer is the final party in the chain, they are the ones responsible for programming the keys. Many will reprogram your keys free of charge, while others will charge a nominal fee. So if your green key seems like it’s restricting your vehicle’s top speed, you might want to check to see if it’s actually the restricted key.

Final Thoughts On The Top Speed Of The Can-Am Maverick X3

The terrain you’re on, the wind speed / direction, the altitude at which you’re riding and the slope of the terrain will all affect your rig’s top speed. All else being equal, however, 80 MPH is about all a stock X3 can muster. For most, this is plenty sufficient.
